This week’s episode began with a shot of a graveyard and Kenny proclaiming more of his “Beast” sh*t. Unless his former sexual partners agree with him, he needs to shut up and just cook. Congressman Aaron Shock was the guest judge for the Quickfire. Padma explains that all food served to members of congress must be hors d'oeuvres, as food can’t influence politicians working with lobbyists. The Quickfire was to serve food on toothpicks (or in some cases, the kind of umbrella straws served with daiquiris, and those plastic swords that held maraschino cherries in the Shirley Temples I drank as a kid). Angelo won with a cucumber, shrimp, and cashew dish. For this, he gained immunity and a sweet $20,000. For the Elimination Challenge, the chefs had to cook a power lunch at The Palm. The power lunch is a Washington tradition, where those politicians and lobbyists discuss fun topics like farm bills and EU exchange rates. The Palm has never handed over the kitchen to non-staff, so the contestants are extra-nervous. Plus, the winner gets their dish put on the menu, and gets their caricature drawn on the wall. They draw knives to see what protein they’ll be working with—lobster, salmon, lamb chops, swordfish, and porterhouse steak. Thankfully, there was no romantic hubbub between Ed and Tiffany, as last week’s preview implied. Ed says that of all the contestants, he trusts Tiffany the most, and “she makes me feel good”— all and all, much more good-natured than romantic. But that was hardly the big scandal of the episode, although it did involve Ed. Ed made a pea purée that Alex supposedly stole and used for his dish. There was no admission of guilt, but I wouldn’t put it past Alex to sabotage his fellow chefs. Tom Colicchio presided over the kitchen like a Zen master; however, it was sad to see him eat the dishes alone in the kitchen without the diners, which included political commentator Joe Scarborough and Senator Mark Warner. Tom later admitting during Judge’s Table that most of the chefs were sloppy and rushed in the kitchen. Alex won for his salmon and (possibly stolen?) pea purée. Andrea went home for her swordfish and couscous. Next week: The chefs cook for ambassadors, who must be much more frightening to cook for than American politicians and correspondents!
